A father and his 29-year-old son worked together refinishing motor vehicle bodies at the father's home. The father had bought a used tank type garden sprayer at a tag sale to spray water on the floor to keep the dust down when repainting auto bodies. The tank had been modified to use compressed air instead of the built-in hand pump. After using it for nearly five years with the modification, the tank exploded in the son's face while he was pressurizing it. He was badly injured, but the father claimed he was not liable. An Attorney from the Haymond Law Firm brought the case to trial. The jury found the father to be 51% negligent, and they awarded the son $164,000.00 which was reduced forty-nine percent.
