Did you know that more than one thousand people were killed near construction or maintenance zones on U.S. roadways in 2005?
When we think of motor vehicle accidents, we often assume that careless or drunk driving is to blame - but even the most vigilant drivers can be injured when our roads are unsafe.
In March 2007, 6 people were killed and 29 were injured when a bus carrying a college baseball team fell off of an overpass onto the Interstate below it. The crash was caused by poor signage and confusing traffic patterns - reasons no one should have to die.
In August 2007, a bridge collapsed in Minneapolis, killing several people and injuring even more. The NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) found design flaws in gusset plates, which helped tie the bridge's steel beams together. The investigation is still ongoing, so it remains to be seen whether these serious errors caused the collapse.
We trust our local, state and federal governments to build and maintain roads that are safe and reliable. Unfortunately, incidents such as these illustrate how government agencies often neglect their responsibilities when it comes to transportation safety.
Car accidents can result from a number of road hazards, including:
- Dangerous highway construction or repair sites
- Incorrectly designed roads
- Improperly maintained roads - marked by uneven / broken pavement or potholes
- Poor signage or inadequately marked roads
If you or a loved one has been injured because of faulty
highway construction or design, you have the right to make sure
the responsible parties are held accountable for their
negligence. These cases can be complex – you should consult with
